data transfer between virtual machines ?

Hi there,
if that has been already asked before, please apologise and give me a link,
otherwise: what is the best/fastest method for vms to transfer data between?
(Oh, i mean all vms setup on the same host!)
Regular network setup, sockets on the host, anything other?
And if there are any recommendations, how can i setup it using libvirt?
A short hint would be appreciated, as this mostly is enough for me to get a starting point!
