First Release of Paravirtual Network Drivers for Windows 2k/XP 32-bit

Today Qumranet, the linux kvm maintainers, released the first release of the paravirtual network drivers for Windows guests running on a kvm host. The drivers are intended for Windows 2000 and Windows XP 32-bit but will also work with Windows 2003 server 32-bit. kvm-61 or later is needed in the host. At the moment only binaries are available.

The drivers are available from the download page of the kvm website. The download site provides the drivers as both a zipped archive and ISO 9660 CD-ROM for easy installation.

To use, download the drivers into the guest (using one of the emulated network cards), and unpack the package. Reboot with '-net nic, model=virtio' instead of the usual setting, and when Windows prompts you for a driver location, select the appropriate directory in the package (Windows XP or Windows 2000).

At the moment, there are no plans to release windows paravirtual block drivers from qumranet. For the moment scsi emulation should provide very good performance.
