How does openvswitch blend in?

Hi *,

obviously I was quite happy to see the release of openvswitch (http://openvswitch.org/) to the public. But I have to admit, that I have not figured out how ovs-vswitchd and the various other tools integrate with kvm.

Has anybody here any info on this? I assume, that ovs-vswitchd would run on any physical host in order to manage virtual switches which are used by VMs ("local" to the physical host and spanning several physical hosts). But that brings up other questions: Is there a central management instance somewhere which is reconfiguring the virtual switches on the various physical hosts when a VMs is migrated from one physical host to another? How is the ovs-vswitchd integrated into the various linux distributions (as it probably interferes with their mechanisms to configure bonding-interfaces and vlans, etc.)?

At the moment I would be very happy to hear something about best practices to use, when implementing openvswtich in an existing infrastructure.

Thx.

OpenFlow seems to be the key

Ok - more input to my own post: Obviously OpenFlow is the key for the openvswitch to provide similar functions as Ciscos/VMWares VNTag, which has been implemented with Ciscos Nexus v1000 and VMWares distributed virtual switch.

More Info on OpenFlow can be found on http://www.openflowswitch.org

Re: openvswitch

neuroserve,

I also read about openvswitch which provides good possibilities for enhancing KVM networking. It supports lots of switching protocols as opposed to just basic bridging features using linux basic bridge utilities. I think if there's integration it'll have to be via libvirt and I think there's a good chance this could happen. I haven't played with it yet but since I see that it can be used as a stand in for bridge utilities you can probably use it with command line right now. I haven't played with it yet.. just starting to look at it.

Thanks for the heads up on the announcement and let us know if you find anything else interesting.
