KVM memory discrepancy?

Hi guys,

I've been playing with KVM (from Xen) for a couple of days and am pretty impressed. Though one thing I am puzzled about is the setting of guest memory value. For example when I run KVM with the '-m 512' option (or similarly when using libvirt) I find that my guest does not have 512MB of memory when I run 'free -m' it's been 503MB in Debian and 496MB Ubuntu. Is there some kind of explanation for this..? :-) (btw I've tried memory ballooning off and it doesn't seem to have made a difference)
