Testing arbitrary network topologies

Hi,

I am using two operating systems: ubuntu 10.04 LTS server (both base os and guests), and pfsense 1.2.3 (freebsd guest). I am testing a routed network setup and would like to do it using kvm. Using linux bridge-utils seems to be the way to go. Is this too simplistic an approach?

My concern is to test the setup before we invest in any hardware. I don't need high performance. I only need the proof of concept.

Is it reasonable to expect to use linux bridge-utils to build arbitrary networks isolated from each other? How about using vlans?

Thank you for your time...
