Off topic: Information on a good VPS host provider needed

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been having lots of problems with my web hosting provider. I don’t know how obvious it is but this site is constantly going down. I’ve tried implementing event handlers for dealing with issues automatically but that still does not help. I’ve tried just about everything and have had enough. I’m planning on moving this website soon and I would really appreciate any recommendations on a good vps hosting provider. Thanks in advance for your comments and recommendations.

Linode

I've been a very satisfied Linode customer for years.

Plug For Rackspace Cloud

I've been using Rackspace cloud and I love them. They are dirt cheap to get started and keep a server up all the time.

Also, their support is really good. You type in a little box and in a minute you are chatting live some someone with a clue.

Tile Networks

Shameless plug: I run a KVM based VPS service called Tile Networks: https://tilenetworks.com/

Despite the incredibly basic website, it is notable for 2 reasons:
1) It hosts qemu.org and related qemu services.
2) It uses a distributed, replicated storage system, so we can hot migrate to avoid downtime due to maintence, and can immediately reboot your VM on an alternate physical machine to greatly reduce downtime due to hardware failure.

$37/month for a 512MB VM, plus $0.15 per gig of storage. Bandwidth is all you can eat.

Readers (and owner) of linux-kvm.com can use the coupon code:
LINUXKVM
to get $0.10/gig.

If you'd like someone bigger (and aren't worried about high availability/hot migration), I second the recommendation for Linode.

Hetzner Online

Haydn

An alternative approach I can recommend is Hetzner Online that offers great pricing on root servers.

Hetzner Online is based in Germany, so pricing is in Euro and the EQ 4 package is 49 euro per month that is currently around US$67.

An EQ 4 package includes an Intel i7 quadcore CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM, two 750GB hard disks, one IPv4 address for host and up to three additional IPv4 addresses. Higher spec options are also available.

For the last 8 months I have been using an EQ 4 option to run a Fedora KVM host with software RAID1 and three virtual machines. Naturally it is more work than using a vendor such as Linode or Slicehost, but it provides lots of flexibility at a very competitive price.

More details on their product matrix here:

YISP

YISP is my VPS of choice. Use WHT50 to get your 50% RECURRING discount. Yes, that's half-price for the rest of your/their life! :-)

Located in the Netherlands, with very good connectivity.

Re: Hetzner Online

+1 for Hetzner Online...it's an ideal KVM host, but perhaps a bit out-of-budget, compared to a VPS :)

Bitfolk.

I'd recommend bitfolk. They have a great service, good prices and are flexible and easy to get hold of.

Linode

www.linode.com .. $20 a month for a xen based host with 200GB of transfer with decent US based connectivity (Atlanta, Newark.. there are a couple more I forget).

Full API to do cloudish things if you decide you want to - day based billing for it. ssh gatwewayed serial console access and web based power cycle.. They even allow you to run custom guest kernels.

I suppose the downside to them for linux-kvm.com is that they run xen. But who knows about the future - until pretty recently they were doing UML quite successfully.

highly recommend.

root server vs VPS

@Kenni Lund
If you only need a very low-end system, then yes, it may be out of budget.

However, once you need systems with more RAM and disk space, the Hetzner Online root servers are in fact lower priced than the common VPS solutions.

For example, a 1GB slice from Slicehost costs US$70 per month and provides 1GB of RAM, 40GB of hard disk space, and 600GB of bandwidth. An equivalent system from Linode is about $60 per month.

For the same pricing level I could have an EQ 4 root server from Hetzner Online configured to provide not just one, but THREE virtual machines each configured with 2GB of RAM, 200GB of hard disk space, and 630GB of bandwidth that still leaves 2GB of RAM allocated to the KVM host.

Hence it doesn't take long to reach the cost effective cross-over point of using a root server versus a Xen VM.

VPS providers

Slicehost and Linode in that order. Simple, built for IT types.

Free VPS hosting for linux-kvm.com

We can provide you a VPS for linux-kvm.com on our hosting cluster for free. OpenVZ or KVM vms are available. If you are interested, please contact me at hosting-at-uvt.cz.

vps

Linode or SliceHost.

Tilaa

Ok, I just couldn't resist adding a shameless plug for our company (Tilaa) as well ;)

We have actually just started to migrate from Xen to KVM. I reckon you might prefer a KVM over a Xen host :) (Linode and Slicehost are both Xen based afaik).

We're completely self-service: You can order/pay online, (re)install/upgrade/reboot and you have access to the console. (No backups yet though)

At the moment we offer Fedora, CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu.

Netherlands based, but directly connected to the AMS-IX (biggest internet exchange in Europe) so low latencies from most of Europe and the US.

We have a 14 days money back guarantee, so feel free to try it out first. And our pricing is competitive too of course.

PerfoHost

We have decided to offer only KVM VPS to our customers and are trying to do our best to popularize the technology. http://perfohost.com/kvm.vps.html — KVM VPS vs OpenVZ/Virtuozzo vs Xen comparative chart.

Choose provider wisely

I can only recommend to choose the host provider wisely, take your time for the decision. There are some good and cheap providers around but you can also find a lot that offer no service and in case of a problem you'll be alone. Compare the ompanies that provide web hosting and then see which one offers the best package for you. I can recommend Linode for VPS hosting, they're reliable and worth the price.

Rack Lodge: Costa Rica Data Center Dedicated Server and VPS

I suggest you to choose Racklodge VPS host provider because Rack Lodge is the leading Offshore Data Center provider in Costa Rica. They designed VPS to provide customers with a way to save money without the sacrifice of performance, flexibility and security.

Good post

It is very important to know whether you need dedicated server hosting or other type of hosting like VPS or managed hosting. Also choose only those companies which offers best response time also.

Thanks.

Hello

There are three things that drive VPS hosting performance hardware, number of virtual private servers on the hardware, and the resources each VPS gets. InMotion uses Dell 2950s with 16GB or 32GB of RAM, 2 high end Quad Core Xeon Processors and most importantly, 15K SAS hard drives. We wish they would release the number of VPS they put on a server, but they probably don't want their competitors to know. They do say it is tied to actual performance of the individual VPS and the types of packages that are on the hardware (they offer three). It would be good to know this, but their customer feedback often talks specifically about how fast the service is.

I am sorry to hear that and I

I am sorry to hear that and I am also sorry and I am also sorry these problems are not so uncommon. I think I rather put all my hopes and trust in an enterprise private cloud but I still need to get some information and check my options with that.

Linux KVM VPS too much?

Hi,

I've been offered a KVM VPS deal and I'd like to know if it's too much:
- 1GB RAM
- 20GB disk space
- 75GB monthly bandwidth
- 1 static IP
- robust VPS control panel
- Full root access
- 3, 1GB external cloud mailboxes
- Managed DNS for one domain (20 records max)
- CentOS, Debian, Fedora

$65 CAD per month

CAD is ~= USD
